Complex and elegant, combining light scents of violets and cherry with notes of tobacco leaves and coffee.

Food Match: Bosco del falco Aglianico del Vulture  is a perfect match to cured meats, steaks and matured cheese.

A deep ruby red wine, Bosco del Falco presents all the charm of the Aglianico grape, sometimes called the Barolo of the South.  Its considerable structure and silky tannins, along with good acidity, work together to produce a deep, well defined finish.

This wine is made utilising Aglianico grapes from the oldest vineyards of the Grifalco della Lucania estate.  Low yield producing plants that are on average 50 years old, with fruit of greater intensity. The harvest is manual, with the grapes placed in wooden crates for a second selection in the "cantina".  De-stemming and soft crushing is followed by fermentation in stainless steel vats.  A separate batch is allowed to rest in French and Slavonian oak barrels.

The wine ages in bottle for at least 12 months and it is young, although drinking nicely now and showing great promise for further development.



This is where it all began for us: from the wines produced by my sister Cecilia and her husband Fabrizio.  We started buying and selling their first wine, a beautiful Vino Nobile that, thanks to their skills, managed to win a tre-bicchieri award by the Gambero Rosso.  As life goes, they sold their successful business and looked south, to Basilicata, a remote and still relatively little-known region of Italy.  They acquired some land around the Mount Vulture, a volcano extinct for thousands of years, and within their vineyards they were lucky enough to find some old vines (some up to 50 years old).  The strong root system of these old plants can extract nutrients and minerals from the depths of the multi layered volcanic soil, through rocks, fossils, sand, lava and more sand.

The mineral content of the soil, alongside the hot days and cool nights typical of the harsh climate found at 450-550 meters above sea level, help these wines to retain a natural acidity and fresh aromatic fruits, producing a very elegant Aglianico.  Fabrizio’s skills in wine making are evident in these wines, where the  tannins, typical of the grape, are tamed and softened but still present in a very beautiful Aglianico del Vulture, as distinct and laid back as their producers.
