History of Methius Brut Riserva

The spumante winery “Metius” was founded in 1986 by two friends who were also oenologists: Carlo Dorigati and Enrico Paternoster.

The cellar where the wine is left to age, in Mezzocorona (Trentino), dates back to the first years of the XIX century. It is built entirely underground with a barrel vault in squared stones. The name “Methius” is the result of a search for a local toponym referring both to the company's product origin and to its birthplace.

The origin of the name is lost in the mists of time. We know that already in 1150 two hamlets on the “Piana Rotaliana” bore the names of Methius Coronae (now Mezzocorona) and Methius Sancti Petri (now Mezzolombardo). “Methius” came from a combination of Celtic and Vulgar Latin.

Area of Origin:

The Faedo and Pressano hills at 350 - 500 m altitude

White, with part of the Chardonnay fermenting in barriques

The cuvée is prepared in the spring following vintage. Bottling and slow prise de mousse at low temperature. The wine is left to age in the bottle about for 5 years, with periodical resuspension of the yeasts. It then follows the stage called remuage on the “pupitres”.  Next come the disgorging stage and the addition of the liqueur d'expedition. The spumante so obtained will age for a further 6 - 8 months before it is put on the market.

“We strongly believe that the best innovation is essentially a respect for traditions. Care for the land is essential: as every good winemaker knows, the quality of a wine  starts in the vineyard. As such, we have since 1990 been adopting the wine“Memorandum of Intent” of Trento that governs the integrated protection of vineyards, selecting the phytosanitary products that can be used and which indicates the most appropriate and less impactful measures against phytophagous insects.

An example is the use of the sexual confusion for the fight against grapevine Moth and vine bugs thus avoiding the use of insecticides.
As such, the Memorandum is a certified self-discipline of winemakers of Trento and also equally regulates certain wine making practices  such as the use of sulphur dioxide, imposing limits much lower than legal ones.
