Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Le Paiole

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico, Le Paiole

Le Paiole is an elegant Verdicchio Classico produced on a single vineyard (4 hectares) in the historical region of Jesi, Castelplanio (Ancona). The coastal area near Jesi is perfectly suited to wine production, with its pebbly fossils in the terrain soil and maritime climate. In fact, this zone within the Esino River valley is considered one of the premier wine producing areas in Italy today.

It contains fresh mineral undertones that recall its proximity to the Adriatic sea. Light golden yellow with pale green tones characterize this lovely Verdicchio. Its bouquet recalls white flowers, sage and anisette, and in vintages from particularly sunny years, mature fruits such as peach and apricot. The taste is fresh and full-bodied.

Rosso Piceno DOC Castel del Piano

Rosso Piceno DOC Castel del Piano

The Rosso Piceno DOC is a blend of the dominant grape variety found in the Marche region and the ever present Italian grape variety of sangiovese.

It is a bright ruby red wine, with soft lightly spiced berry fruits flavours and gentle fine tannins and best drunk young to preserve its freshness.

A perfect pasta wine it will work also well with gammon and other lighter red meats.

Some background info about the wine from Amanda Shuster:

The wine’s name refers to the Piceni, or Picenes, the ancient tribe that dwelled there until the Roman conquered around the 2nd century BC. This red blend dates very far back. Hannibal is said to have refreshed his troops on the wine. And in the first century AD, Pliny the Elder made mention of the Piceni wine in his writings.

A minimum 60% Sangiovese is required, with the rest a balance of Montepulciano and sometimes the white varietals Trebbiano and Passerina to soften the flavors. Rosso Piceno Supreriore must be aged at least 12 months in barrel and have a minimum ABV of 12%. The Superiore wines are limited to the higher quality/lower yield Ascoli Piceno vineyard zone.
